Babbacombe Cliff Railway 90th Anniversary Celebrations

Babbacombe Cliff Railway 90th Anniversary

The historic treasure that is Babbacombe Cliff Railway celebrates its 90th anniversary on Saturday 2 April.

This amazing feat of engineering has been transporting locals and holidaymakers up and down the cliffs from Babbacombe Downs to the hidden gem that is Oddicombe Beach since 1926.

Currently owned and run by a Community Interest Company the railway carries a staggering 100,000 people each year.

To mark the 90th anniversary a day of live music is planned down on Oddicombe Beach with a marquee on the promenade and entertainment from The Old Gaffers Sea Shanty Crew, Riviera Sound and High Society Jazz Band.

Nicky Allen, Marketing Manager of this incredibly popular attraction, says “We are delighted to be celebrating the Cliff Railway’s 90th anniversary.  We are very lucky to have such an amazing attraction still in great working order after all this time, due largely to how seriously the Board members of the Community Interest Company take their role as custodians.  The Cliff Railway is a real part of this community used by many local people throughout the year.  But it’s also a big attraction for people who visit the area on holiday.  Not only do they enjoy travelling up and down the cliffs but it’s the way that many people discover the beautiful Oddicombe Beach.  This is why lots of our visitors then return year after year.”  She added “Oddicombe has undergone something of a renaissance over the past couple of years with fantastic new facilities on offer.  Babbacombe generally is fast becoming a “must visit” location for anyone holidaying on the English Riviera.  We’re hoping to have plenty of people celebrating with us on Saturday 2 April and enjoying the elements that we all love about the railway and the area generally.”

The fun kicks off on Oddicombe Beach at 11am with live music until approximately 3:30pm on Saturday 2 April and is completely free to enjoy.  Usual Cliff Railway travel charges apply.
