Oddicombe Beach was packed with hoards of people enjoying the Babbacombe Cliff Railway 90th anniversary celebrations on Saturday 2 April.
With a Music Marquee featuring various live music acts throughout the day, the sailing boats were out, the sun was shining and the Cliff Railway was shuttling visitors up and down the cliffs all day long.
Babbacombe Cliff Railway is owned and run by a Community Interest Company and Chairman John Ayres said “We had an absolutely fantastic day on Saturday. We were delighted that so many people came down to Oddicombe to celebrate this important anniversary with us.” He added “Babbacombe Cliff Railway carries around 100,000 people each year and we couldn’t let our 90th anniversary pass without marking the occasion in some way. The atmosphere was really wonderful and we had over 1200 people travelling on the Cliff Railway on Saturday.”
Also present at the event were David and Mark Taylor and their wives. David and Mark are the great-grandsons of Mrs John Taylor, Lady Mayoress, who opened the railway back in 1926. John said “It was really great that David and Mark were able to join us. They were very interested in the Cliff Railway and we’re hoping that they will be back to see us again soon but more on that story later.”
Babbacombe Cliff Railway is open from 9.30am 7 days a week and is looking forward to a bumper season. John said “Oddicombe Beach is a really wonderful place to visit. Family-friendly, away from the hustle and bustle with things to do and great food and drink, we’re expecting to have a very busy year.”
The next event planned down on the beach is the Babbacombe Ukulele Festival on Saturday 4 June.
